9 Tips to Experience the Best Road Trip
One of the best ways to experience all the beauty of this country is by taking a road trip. Road trips are a great way to get to the heart of a region, unlike pre-booked vacations that often require hurried guides, busy airports, and detailed or complex itineraries. Take a road trip that allows you to enjoy traveling at your own pace, immersing yourself in nature and enjoying the scenery.
You can take a solo road trip with friends or family. However, road trips require creativity and planning to ensure success. Here are some great tips to make sure your next road trip is the best it can be.

1. Get your car ready for the trip.
Don’t let a car breakdown ruin your wonderful road trip. Make sure to have your mechanic inspect your car before you start your trip. Even if you can’t predict the road and every mechanical failure you may encounter, checking parts, fluids, tires before hitting the road can save you a lot of time you might spend looking for a mechanic instead of playing at the beach or sand no matter where.
Some things to make sure they are in good condition are the car battery, brakes, making sure you have a spare tire, making sure all fluids are changed and all moving parts oiled. Remember not to forget that your lights and electrical equipment are in working order. Doing so will ensure you have a smooth and successful road trip and the car will take you to and from.
Another thing to make sure you have is all the documentation for your car. Check that your car insurance is up to date. Pack extra cables, first aid kit, flashlight, and anything you might need in an emergency or if you get lost. Make sure you also pack your driver’s license and keep it where you can easily reach it at all times.
2. Divide your stuff
Searching for a big bag of clothes, toiletries or electronics on the road is sure to drive you crazy, especially if you have to do it more than once. Use smaller bags to sort everything; you can pack your essentials in your birdie backpack and the things you don’t need every day in a suitcase.
For example, if you know you’re going to the beach, you can pack a backpack with your beach clothing, towels, sunscreen, etc. Then prepare another bag with your overnight essentials so that when you book a hotel for the night, you don’t have to bring the entire suitcase to the hotel room, but leave it in the car.
3. Make a plan
Having a plan for your entire road trip is critical. Make sure you plan where you will go, sleep, destination and everything you will do on your road trip. If you don’t have a clear plan, you may end up spending your entire road trip vacation on your first stop and then rushing through other destinations.
You don’t have to schedule your itinerary by the minute, but a simple idea of how much time you think each destination will take and where you want to visit would be ideal. Make sure you carve out some extra time for spontaneous destinations and activities.
When planning your trip, don’t plan a full day of driving. Scenic routes are great, but plan your drive ahead of time and make sure you stick to your plan. Few people like to drive for long periods of time.
4. Create a budget
Before hitting the road, you need to create a budget for everything you’ll be spending money on. Even if you are traveling alone, a budget is essential.
Make a budget for gas, hotels, your meals and snacks, any activities you plan to do, alcohol, toll roads and souvenirs. If you’re traveling with someone or family, take this into consideration when setting your budget. It’s best to plan for their accommodation, food, etc. If you have kids, budget for that too.
5. Try the Back Path
It doesn’t make sense to leave the highway and use the country route unless you have a strict schedule and a specific destination. However, some of these trails offer stunning scenery and the experience can be breathtaking.
Some US roadmaps show interesting trails. You don’t want to be stuck on a boring road with nothing to see. However, don’t use these reverse routes blindly. Always have a map and an escape plan ready if you get lost.
6. Join a roadside assistance service
You can never predict what will happen on a road trip. Worse is being stuck on the side of the road, not knowing who to call because you’re not in your hometown.
Joining a roadside assistance service may help you connect to a local tow truck service and mechanic. This can save you a lot of trouble and downtime.
7. Download songs and movies
Streaming movies or music can quickly kill your phone or laptop. Before starting your road trip, make sure you download the movies or music you want to listen to or watch on the go.
As you continue to travel, delete movies and other content you watch to make room for more songs, movies, or podcasts.

8. Don’t forget to stock up on plenty of water.
On road trips, water is essential. It helps cool you down on hot summer days and helps fight fatigue and headaches. Also, you can use the water for other purposes, like pouring it over the engine when it overheats.
You can also wash your face and cool down with water, and you can even clean the inside of your car if you spill something. Don’t buy water from anywhere. You’d better carry your water and plenty of water.
9. Buy souvenirs
If you make multiple stops in different areas, you can buy some souvenirs. Souvenirs are a great way to remember your trip. Get a postcard, keychain, coffee mug, t-shirt or whatever you find interesting.
You can display them in your home as a reminder of your road trip when you get home.
You can also get creative with pictures. For example, you can photograph places, road signs for those memorable moments.
