Forgot someone’s birthday?this is what you do

Birthdays are special. If you’ve ever ignored a friend, partner, or loved one’s birthday, you know how distressing that can be.

Not only are there painful realizations, but you may carry some guilt with you for days. What should you do in this situation?

Five ways to make up for a forgotten birthday

Few things hurt more than a missed birthday from someone you love and care about. Arguably this is a fairly minor sin, and it’s common.

On the other hand, some people think it’s very bad and feel totally offended and disrespected. Here’s how you can start making up.

1. admit it right away

Realizing that you forgot your birthday will make you want to curl up in a ball and hide in a corner for the next month. But, as embarrassing and uncomfortable as it may feel, you should admit the offense as soon as possible.

Do not send text messages, emails, DMs or letters. At least pick up the phone and make a call. If possible, go meet another person.

When you apologize, don’t try to plug in a million excuses, or even one — this will often make it seem like you’re justifying your mistake. Make your apology as honest and remorseful as possible. Admit mistakes and ask forgiveness.

Of course, you should never copy and paste someone else’s apology, but this provides a great example of what an honest person should look like:

“Mary, I’m so sorry I forgot your birthday yesterday. There’s no excuse. I let my busy schedule keep me from deliberately engaging with the people who mean the most to me. I know that must have been incredibly hurtful. I I want to apologize and ask your forgiveness.”

Note that there are no excuses. There’s a small potential explanation, yes, but it’s not an excuse. The point remains the apology.

2. Send flowers

Few gestures express your apology like flowers. After apologizing, order local flowers to your friend’s home or office.

Work with a local florist to ensure that fresh arrangements (and look fresh) are sent quickly. This doesn’t make up for the fact that you forgot your birthday, but it’s another sign that you’re thinking about them and really regret your oversight.

3. Take them out to dinner

While your friends may not want to have dinner with you right away, wait at least a few days before inviting them out, your treat. Sitting down to drink and eat together is a great way to mend any fence that may have been damaged.

During dinner, make sure the conversation is focused on the other person. Listen and talk more. This evening should be about celebrating your friends!

4. Give a thoughtful gift

You can also buy someone a thoughtful birthday present after you send flowers right away. Now is not the time for gift cards or anything like that. It has to be a meaningful gift.

A thoughtful gift is important, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. You’re not trying to go broke; just show you care!

5. Add their birthdays to your calendar

Every friend or loved one gets a “gift” – and you just use your “gift” with that particular person. No matter what you do, you can’t forget their birthdays next year (or anytime within the next ten years).

It’s a good idea to take some proactive steps to prevent this from happening again. The first step is to add the anniversary to your phone’s calendar via a notification. This will ensure that you continue to see it year after year.

For extra protection, you can also schedule to send yourself an email on your birthday next year. Schedule a delivery at 7am so you can be the first to wish them a happy birthday.

all add up

Missing a birthday is embarrassing, embarrassing and disappointing. While you can’t rewind and change the past, you can control your reactions.

By acknowledging your negligence and going above and beyond to get the situation right, you’ll make sure your friend or loved one feels cared for and appreciated again.
