How to Easily Propagate Orchids at Home

While most orchids are only hardy to grow in the U.S., the vigorous blooms make excellent indoor specimens if the soil and moisture are adequate.We can reproduce orchids with the same characteristics as the mother plant through simpler methods, including stem cuttings, back bulb cuttings, top cuttings and Huiqi cuttings, or by planting several

Today we will introduce 2 common methods for orchid lovers to grow orchids at home.

1. Cuttings

For stem cuttings, you’ll need a waterproof tray about 3 inches deep. Fill it with damp sphagnum moss, damp sand, or a mixture of the two. Then cut a cane at least 10 inches long and cut near the base of the orchid and just above the nodes, which are the leaf nodes. Cut the cane into pieces with at least two nodes remaining, and coat the raw ends of the pieces with a powdered antifungal agent, such as charcoal, cinnamon, or sulfur. After laying the pieces horizontally on top of the medium in the tray, press them only lightly into it, leaving their surfaces bare. Place the tray in a clear plastic bag and place it in a warm location where it receives bright light but out of direct sunlight. After about three to four months, some cuttings may develop new plantlets from the nodes.

Here are the instructions:

1. Using pruning shears or a sharp knife, cut off at least 12 inches of orchid stem near the base. Divide the stem into several 3- to 4-inch sections, making sure each section has dormant buds.

2. Spread sphagnum moss in a shallow dish and spray the moss until completely wet. Put the shavings in the tray. Cover the tray with polyurethane plastic wrap and place it in a location that is at least 60°F out of direct sunlight.

3. In each orchid plant’s 3- to 4-inch pot, fill with fir bark potting mix to within an inch of the top of the container. Once the orchid stem segments have grown plantlets from the buds, place one in each container and cover the remaining stem segments and roots with potting mix.

2. Counter inserts

A keiki (baby in Hawaiian) is a small plant that may sometimes form on or near the stem of an orchid. Let it grow on the parent plant until its roots are at least 1 inch long and it has two to three leaves. Keiki is a great way to propagate orchids without pollinating orchids and growing orchid seedlings.

Water the mother plant the day before you plan to remove the keiki. Then cut the stem below its base and plant it in a pot of fine orchid bark, keeping the roots close to the surface. Mr. Brown Thumb has a great tutorial showing us how to cut orchid keiki and plant it. Let’s check it out there.
