How to use skin care products in your beauty routine the right way

If you want a twelve-step skincare routine, there is no perfect skincare routine; if it works for you, go ahead. If you’re a minimalist and only have a few steps in your skincare routine, and it works, then there’s nothing wrong with that.

However, the method you use to layer your skin care is essential and can significantly affect the effectiveness of your skin care products. If you’re using products to address a specific problem in your skin, how you layer is critical to making sure they work.

No one wants to spend money on skincare and then they don’t work. If you’ve ever bought a face oil or a bucket of retinoids and wondered where in your skincare routine you should use them, read on to find out. This article explains the correct order to layer skincare products to ensure their effectiveness.

1. Makeup remover

Only remove makeup at night after a long day of makeup. You don’t need to do this step in your morning routine unless you go to bed without removing your makeup (which is highly not recommended). Removing makeup from your face should always be the first step in your nightly skincare routine.

Look for products that break down and melt all your makeup, like mascara and matte lipstick. A good example is micellar water, which removes all makeup but is still gentle on your skin. You can also remove makeup with a cleansing oil and double clean with micellar water.

2. Cleanser

Cleaning your face is a step that should be included in your morning and evening skincare routine.

After removing makeup, the next step is to wash your face with a mild cleanser. The cleanser effectively removes bacteria, oil, dirt, pollutants and dead skin cells that build up on the skin throughout the day.

This step is also essential once you wake up and prepare your face to absorb the products and active ingredients you will use in the morning.

There are many brands of cleansers on the market today, but which one you choose depends on your skin type. Make sure you pay attention to the ingredient list on the cleaner. Avoid cleansers that contain sulfates, as they are harsh and can strip your skin of moisture and natural oils, leaving it dry, irritable, and tight.

If you have normal or dry skin, it’s best to choose a cleanser that contains moisturizing ingredients like peptides. If you have combination, acne-prone, or oily skin, you should look for a cleanser with mild exfoliating properties, such as salicylic acid, which is effective at removing dead cells that can clog pores and cause acne. If you have active acne, you can also choose a cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide, which targets the bacteria in acne.

3. Toner or serum

The next step after cleansing is to apply a toner or serum. This step is essential in your morning and evening skincare routine.

Toners and serums are essential in your skincare routine as it prepares your skin to absorb any active ingredients you’ll be using. However, make sure to choose a toner or serum based on your skin type.

In the past, people used toners to balance the pH of their skin after using soapy cleansers. Today, toners are used with active ingredients like chemical exfoliants to address skin concerns. For example, glycolic acid toners are great for oily skin and help eliminate dead skin cells faster for clearer, more radiant skin. Alternatively, if you have dry skin, you can use a moisturizing toner.

Serums, on the other hand, are more hydrating. Look for serums with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which hydrate your skin, make it look plumper, and lock in moisture in your skincare routine.

4. Eye cream

Apply eye cream to your morning and evening skincare routine. After removing makeup, cleansing, and toning, the next step is to apply eye cream.

Eye cream is great for targeting fine lines, crow’s feet, dark circles and puffiness. For best results, look for eye creams with active ingredients like retinol or peptides, which are best for fighting wrinkles and reducing puffiness.

Use your ring finger to apply the eye cream to avoid pulling the skin around the eyes. Make sure to apply to the entire eye area, not just under the eyes.

5. Serum

Use your serum in your morning and evening routine. This is the stage where you will apply a lot of active substances to the skin. Serums contain higher concentrations of active ingredients and are an essential part of your skincare routine.

When using a serum in your day and night routine, you should not use the same serum. During the day, you can protect your skin from external free radicals with a serum like antioxidant-rich vitamin C. You can repair your skin with a growth-rich peptide serum at night.

6. Retinol

Use retinol in your nighttime routine. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that is great for slowing down the anti-aging process. It targets wrinkles and fine lines as it increases cell turnover and collagen production in the skin.

For starters, use retinol every other night until you build up a tolerance.

7. Moisturizers

Best used morning and night after all else, as they hydrate and seal in the ingredients you’ve used before. Look for moisturizers that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which seal in the outer layers of the skin and absorb moisture to rehydrate.

8. Facial Oil

Facial oil is the last step in your nighttime routine and the second step before your morning sunscreen routine. This is because facial oils are occlusive, which means they help trap moisture in the skin.

9. Sunscreen

This is the last step in your morning skincare routine. You should apply sunscreen every day to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is more effective after facial oil; you don’t want to apply anything after sunscreen to prevent it from working.
