Amazing results without any professional equipment – just the kind of DIY craft projects we do! Do it alone, or get a few friends to help you, either way, and you’ll soon come up with results you never dreamed of.

what do you need:

  • small bowl
  • toothpick
  • Two shades of nail polish of your choice – choose a contrasting color
  • Vaseline or similar to Vaseline

How it works:

  1. Put a small piece of paper around the bowl you’ll be using to help reduce the mess…it can get a little messy!
  2. Add some water to a bowl, then add a small drop of both nail polish colors to the water. Add the dark color first, then add the lighter color to the middle of the dark drop. Then turn the darkness into light, and so on, about eight times, letting the polish spread over the water each time.
  3. You can then use a toothpick to manipulate the color to create a string of hearts like the one in the picture here. Start by drawing a straight line from the center to the edge of the cup, then do the same in the opposite direction. Next, draw lines inward from the rim of the bowl, about four times on each side – this should produce the effect you see here.
  4. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the skin around your nails to keep the polish from sticking to your skin.
  5. Apply clear or light varnish to your nails and let them dry before continuing.
  6. Dip your nails in patterned liquid to transfer incredible patterns from the water’s surface.
  7. Remove petroleum jelly to remove excess polish
