How To DIY Shirley’s Salvage Spool Ottoman

Salvaged Spool Footrest

This lattice ottoman looks so homey that you can’t believe it’s made from recycled spools. It’s used very well, like being found from an antique. I can’t wait to make one of my favorite velvet fabric colors for my living room this weekend. You can go to Design Sponge for more information.

Material:

  • 1 20″ diameter empty wire spool (hardware stores usually throw these away, so ask if you can pick them up)
  • 8 pieces of pre-cut 1″ x 2″ x 6″ wood (hardware store will cut it for you)
  • wood glue
  • 32 1 ¾” screws
  • A piece of foam (from 3″ to 6″ thick, with a circumference at least 1/2″ larger than the wood)
  • spray glue
  • Scrap cloth (for mounting around a footrest frame measuring approximately 8″ x 65″. One option is to use bendable cardboard)
  • 1.5 yards cotton or polyester batting
  • 1 ½ yards of 54″ wide fabric
  • ¾” yard of scrap cloth to cover the bottom of the finished footstool
  • Threaded and Direct
  • staples
  • 4 screws on the leg plate (hardware store)
  • 4 fancy footrest legs (look around for good legs on rough, cheap Goodwill furniture)
