Tips to Remember

In formal wear, color often plays an important role. As a rule of thumb, more colors, bolder patterns, and over-embellishment often make outfits less formal and less appropriate for the environment in which you want to wear them.

That’s not to say you can’t wear any color or pattern on your clothes. It’s more about making an item your standout and building around it.

1. Pants

Formal cut trousers come in a variety of cuts, from fitted cuts to bootleg and cigarette cuts. What works best for you is the only rule to follow when choosing a style. The fun with these is that they fit as long as they are styled and fitted correctly.

Always make sure the hem doesn’t wrap around the ankle, sticking to neutral shades like navy, black and grey will give you the most versatility.

They can be paired with a variety of different footwear options, including pumps, loafers, and boots, and can be mixed and matched with just about any top option.

2. skirt

Skirts can be a little tricky when it comes to formal wear. Regardless of your style, any clothing that is too short or too tight is generally unacceptable. But that doesn’t mean you have to wear long dresses that go straight to the floor.

There’s a reason why pencil skirts are a timeless classic. For decades, it cemented its place in formal attire, fitting slightly at the hips and ending at the knees.

The beauty of pencil skirts is that you can wear them with just about anything. And because it comes in a variety of solid colors, checkered patterns, and materials like cotton and leather, you’ll never get bored. But, of course, if a pencil skirt is not quite to your taste, an A-line skirt is also perfectly suitable.

3. Shirts

The traditional button-down shirt will never mislead you when it comes to formal wear. A crisp white cotton shirt or dark neutral shades are very versatile and can be easily paired with anything in your wardrobe to build as a solid neutral base. If you don’t feel like color, muted pastel shades like pink and champagne yellow are fun and sexy options.

Alternatively, opt for a silk blouse or blouse with additional details, such as a Chinese collar or three-quarter sleeves, to make your outfit noble and feminine. In warmer months, look for lighter, breathable materials; in winter, opt for heavier cotton or wool.

4. Dresses

Dresses always find a place in any wardrobe. Whether it’s an elegant cocktail party or a Sunday lunch with friends, there’s a dress for every occasion. Of course, like skirts, dresses have a rule or two to follow when styling them for more formal occasions, but there’s nothing too complicated about it.

Clothes in this environment should fit but not be too tight. They should hit you at knee or calf length and ideally should have some kind of sleeve. You can quickly fix this by adding a jacket or sweatshirt to the top.

Avoid buying anything too bright or decorative, and instead look for your accessories to create a statement.

5. Trailblazers

A blazer is one of the best options for formal wear. However, while it may have made a name for itself in the boardroom, incorporating blazers into more casual attire is becoming more and more popular. This versatility makes it a worthwhile investment.

You may be tempted to use this item for color; if allowed, you should follow this wish. A light summer linen blazer can hold this bold expression. For winter, however, stick to dark colors and minimal detail for the widest range of use.

winter

Just like summer, winter doesn’t require a whole new wardrobe to dress up. But a simple change to some of the clothes you wear regularly will help you get through the colder months with ease.

Swap out dresses and shirts for heavier materials, pack away summer heels, opt for sophisticated high-heeled boots, and swap traditional collared shirts for neutral turtlenecks to keep you feeling warm and warm.

summer

Perfecting a formal look in summer can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. The trick is to swap out the staples you normally wear for a lighter material or a different style alternative. For example, dresses and pencil skirts will help you feel less restrained, while switching to a more breathable fabric like silk for a shirt will keep you cool.
