4 Water Sports to Try During Your Nantucket Vacation

Nantucket, Massachusetts is a fantastic vacation destination and a top destination for water sports enthusiasts. This New England island has some of the most beautiful beaches and coastlines, with varying water quality and weather conditions.

The water in the port is calm and level. But there is a steady swell to the south of the Atlantic coast. In other words, the conditions are suitable for water sports enthusiasts of all skill levels and ages.

The island is located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and can be reached by ferry or plane. Nantucket is also known for its well-preserved architecture. All of these beautiful houses, cottages and beach apartments contribute to the island’s magnificent charm. Many people prefer to book a house for their Nantucket vacation. Some rentals even come with amenities like surfboards and other watersports gear.

There are also many watersports schools, rentals and excursions for beginners and experienced watersports enthusiasts alike.

Here are some popular water sports and activities to enjoy during your stay in Nantucket this summer.

1. Kitesurfing

Whether you’ve been kitesurfing for years or you’re eager to learn how to ride the waves and pick up some neat tricks, Nantucket is a great place to practice this fun sport.

While the winds are very steady throughout the year, during the summer they are predominantly from the southwest. Local experts and watersports school instructors recommend the harbor as the best spot for kitesurfing in summer. In other seasons, northeasterly and southerly winds prevail.

Pokomo Beach is one of the top places to learn how to ride a board while kiting, surfing or kayaking.

Local licensed kitesurfing instructors provide the latest gear and lessons for all ages and experience levels. They will help you stay safe and learn the basic skills you need to enjoy kitesurfing. Or, if you already have experience, they can teach you advanced jumps and tricks.

2. Kayaking

For those willing to explore the island and its shores by kayak, the good news is that Nantucket has the right locations and conditions, as well as different kayak rentals.

The calmest waters are on the island’s north coast, which borders the partially enclosed Nantucket Sound. This makes the Harbor a top choice for beginners and families alike for safe kayaking.

But always keep in mind that on this island, also known as the “Little Cinderella of the Sea”, the weather and sea can change suddenly at any time.

So if you want to be extra safe, rent a kayak and head to one of several sheltered ponds for a leisurely paddle.

One of the most picturesque ponds for kayaking is the tidal Coskata Pond. It is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a beautiful barrier beach and is part of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Sanctuary.

If you want a safer, shallower option, you can head to West Nantucket’s freshwater Long Pond.
Another great option is boating at Sesachacha Kettle Pond in southeast Nantucket or Hummock Pond along the coast.

Those who are more experienced and adventurous can plan an exciting kayak trip to the barrier beaches of the Coatue Peninsula. It is home to the stunning Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Sanctuary.

There are several sailboat and kayak rentals on the island, the most popular of which are located on Nantucket Harbor itself.
You can rent single or double kayaks, SUPs and even sailboats, or sign up for group lessons or guided tours. The rental service can ship gear anywhere on the island.

If you’re lucky, your rental host might include a kayak or other watersports gear in the price, too.

3. surfing

Nantucket is popular with surfers of all skill levels for its fun surf, flat waters in the east and waves in the south. The varied surf conditions on this small island are perfect for those willing to learn or send their kids to surf school. But also for more adventurous surfers who are willing to test Atlantic waves coming from different directions.

There are two surf schools on the island. Nantucket Surf School is located in Cisco Beach. The second is ACK Surf School, located on Nobadeer Beach. Both beaches are located on the south coast of the island.

You can rent a variety of surf gear and wetsuits, and sign up for surf camps, group lessons, private lessons, or just enjoy surfing on your own.

Other activities you can enjoy include body surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and even SUP yoga.

If you are a novice or have young children, the northern beaches such as Dionis, Children’s, Jetties are better suited as the waters are flat and calm.

Nantucket has a surf club, as well as a variety of surf shops and bars where you can meet friendly surfers and locals.

4. Water skiing

If you want to experience some real action on the waters of the Nantucket coast, then you should plan a water ski excursion or excursion.

Local companies provide all the equipment you need to safely enjoy wakeboarding, surfing, wakeboarding, hydrofoiling or rafting.

There is no better place to be introduced to this exciting water sport than in the harbour, where the water is calm, waist-deep and flat.

A licensed instructor will give you all the necessary basics and safety instructions. They can also teach new skills and techniques to more experienced individuals.

You can go on an excursion and practice your wakeboarding skills while your friends or family enjoy the island and ocean views from the boat.

Best of all, licensed aquatics instructors can carry a variety of different equipment. This will allow you to try one or more of the available options – wakesurf, wakeboard, tubing, hydrofoil or wakeboard – all in one trip.
