Growing your own vegetables is fun and rewarding, and we have plenty of projects to do in our garden. I personally love all the creative and new ideas I try in my own yard. As you can see, backyards in California are getting smaller and smaller, making it very difficult to grow vegetables in open land. We have a way to grow potatoes without soil. And grow strawberries in gutter pots on land. Homemade food could be one possible solution to rising food prices.

Today we are going to share another sustainable farming system: the aquaponics system. “Aquaponics is a food production system that combines traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish, or shrimps in tanks) with hydroponics (growing plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, the excrement of animals raised accumulates in the water, increasing toxicity. In aquaponics, water from the aquaculture system is fed into the hydroponic system, and the by-products are broken down by nitrogen-fixing bacteria into nitrates and nitrites, which are used as nutrients by the plants substances. The water is then recycled back into the aquaculture system.”

If you have a large open space, you can try to build your own aquaponic garden at low cost, using plastic trays or PVC pipes to grow plants over water.
