Mattresses are the receiving end of dead skin cells, sweat, stains, dust mites, and all sorts of lovely things. Despite sheets and mattresses, you still need to regularly clean what you sleep on every night. If you’ve ever watched a documentary about what lurks in your mattress, you probably won’t be falling asleep anytime soon. Here’s an easy home DIY solution to cleaning and cleaning your mattress:

Supplies you will need:

• 1 cup of baking soda
• Four to five drops of lavender oil (or your other favorite essential oil)
• a jar with a lid
• vacuum

Combine ingredients in an airtight jar and shake well. Sift the mixture over the mattress (the above mixture can cover half of a king-size bed). Let it sit for an hour to give the ingredients of the mixture time to draw out dirt and moisture. Then vacuum it up. Lavender oil is a great choice for promoting sleep and relieving stress, you can use tea tree oil or other essential oils of your choice.

1. It’s best to vacuum every time you turn the mattress, or once a season. The key: “Use a clean upholstery attachment” because vacuums do dirty work.
2. Sift baking soda over the mattress to deodorize, let the mattress sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum with a clean upholstery attachment.
3. If you need to deal with stains, the main three are proteins, oils, and tannins, with proteins being the ones you see on your mattress.
