In reality, health is far more complicated than these popular articles might seem. There is no one-size-fits-all choice because people’s health is intrinsically linked to their genes, history, environment and lifestyle. What is herbal tea?

Herbal teas are also sometimes called herbal infusions. They’re not actually tea (meaning they don’t come from the tea tree plant), but are made by steeping parts of other plants in hot water. Other teas contain harmful chemicals or dyes that can increase the risk of cancer if placed in hot water. And don’t assume that equipment for steeping loose leaf tea is necessarily better. Anything that contains aluminum or plastic will release flakes into your tea, which you then ingest and your body has to deal with. Aluminum has been linked to degenerative brain diseases, and plastic has been linked to endocrine diseases and certain types of cancer.

How much is appropriate?

So if there’s too much tea or something and you don’t want to drink herbal tea because the health benefits are so tempting, how do you determine the right amount for you? There are no hard-and-fast guidelines, as everyone is different in body shape and size, and with varying degrees of sensitivity, but the general consensus seems to be that five or fewer cups of tea a day are safe for the average person.

That’s five cups of all teas, which means you can’t drink five cups of green tea, then five cups of ginger tea, and then think you’re innocent. If you are short or thin, a value below this may be best for you. It’s also worth noting that one cup is 250ml; many popular mugs and to-go cups are actually much larger than 250ml, so it’s easy to drink a lot more than you want.
