Work/life balance has never been more important, yet misguided. There’s a huge industry focused on wellness and mindfulness, but it doesn’t matter how many spa kits you buy; they’re not going to help you achieve a better work/life balance. It takes a career change, finding the right employer, and knowing what you’re passionate about.

In an ideal world, everyone would do a job they love. Usually, the job should be something they love, something they’re good at, and something they can get paid for well. Unfortunately, not everyone will be in this job role right now, and if you’re not, then you may find yourself struggling to manage your stress and your health.

Why a healthy work/life balance is needed

While there are many personal reasons why you might want a better work/life balance (for example, more time to travel or more time to pursue a hobby), the biggest reason is your health and mental health.

Overworking can lead to chronic stress, a serious problem that can seriously affect your health. If it persists, and you don’t get regular stress relief, it can even lead to anxiety disorders.

There’s a reason workers today are more stressed, anxious and even depressed than ever before, because the pursuit of capitalism overshadows human health.

This question even applies to characters whose primary goal is health. Nurses face chronic fatigue, compassion fatigue, and unsafe working conditions due to the pandemic. However, they are not only forced to work more stressful hours; they also have a moral obligation to help those in need.

How to Improve Your Work/Life Balance

Work/life balance isn’t about what you can buy, it’s about how you spend your day.

1. Keep working towards your dream job

Adding a degree or further training may seem like a violation of the promise of work/life balance, but it isn’t. In fact, by learning to invest in your future career, you can stay satisfied as if you were making progress. Never underestimate the dangers of feeling stuck, especially when you’re under pressure.

Take nurses as an example. Working in a hospital can be stressful, especially if your dream is to do more one-on-one work with patients in a calmer environment. By investing in further training, you can take the training into your own hands. It does take work and will take a few years, but slow progress can help you better manage stress and ultimately enjoy the work/life balance you love.

2. Don’t fill your free time with scrolling

One of the reasons you may feel restless and often stressed is because you spend your free time browsing social media. Social media is designed to be addictive, and with too much exposure, you’ll never “catch up.” It also changes our brains, making it harder to focus on other things that take longer than a few seconds to engage.

By reducing or stopping rolling time and filling it with things you enjoy that relax you, you can get more out of your downtime without changing your career. Free time is supposed to help you enjoy your time, so if you find that you spend hours scrolling and don’t know where the time is going, it’s important to make a change.

3. Support your health

The body can only give you so much when it’s running low on fuel. The fuel in question isn’t just calories. By improving your diet and getting better sleep, you can improve your work/life balance simply by improving your body’s ability to manage stress.

When you don’t get a good night’s rest, your ability to deal with stressful situations, noisy situations, and even a lot of work can be significantly reduced. The same is true when you are not eating well. In these cases, the best way to improve your quality of life is to make it easier, make it a routine, and give your body what it needs.

3. Rely on a support network

A final tip for improving your work/life balance without actually changing your current work situation is to create and rely on a support network. This can be other people at work, trusted colleagues, friends and family, or even a therapist. All of these options are available, and it’s important to diversify the people you depend on. The only exception is your therapist, who is not only trained but will provide you with intensive one-on-one support and advice based on your needs.

You need a support network to help understand your stress, what’s causing it and how to fix it. The most obvious answers don’t always work, and without this introspection, you could end up taking stress from one job to another.

It’s not just about you: Employers need to step up too

Although you may feel that managing a healthy work/life balance is up to you, that’s not the case. A good balance starts with the manager, who needs to provide you with the environment in which to succeed. It is also in their best interest.

Take, for example, the productivity increase seen after all remotes suddenly had to become remote. Even post-pandemic, remote work is expected to boost productivity by 5%. Quality of life improves when breaks from work can be used to do household chores, or to spend time with pets or loved ones. There are enough management tools today to easily keep track of employees’ work without having to make them sit at their desks in the office.

What this means to you is that, at the end of the day, one of the best things you can do for your work/life balance is find an employer that supports it. This can be found in every industry, even healthcare.

1. Remote or flexible working

For most people, remote or flexible work will be the cornerstone of work/life balance. Simply taking commuting out of the equation can do wonders. That’s a few hours of the day, not to mention downtime while you’re at work waiting for one thing or another.

2. Review the workload

Employers need to review workload. There is a trend to provide more characters, which should be done by multiple people. You may want to prove yourself, but taking on too much at once is a disaster waiting to happen. Not only do you need to be careful not to take on “wish list” job roles, but your manager should also review your workload, especially as your business expands. You may be the best, but you only have so many hours in a day that eventually having more people on deck is essential.

3. Limit after-hours contact

After-hours contact should be limited, or banned altogether. More and more countries are making it illegal because at the end of the day, if your employer contacts you and asks you to respond after the workday and doesn’t pay overtime for your privileges, they’re stealing from you money. Time is money, and your free time is priceless.

4. Offer benefits options

Not everyone wants a gym membership. Some people may not need child care. Employers should provide a list of benefits and give employees choices so they can receive the benefits that best contribute to their work/life balance.

Employers can support you in a number of ways, but often working remotely, stopping contact after hours, and reviewing your workload should be your top priorities. Benefits are just benefits and should be seen as the icing on the cake, and the top three above are the cake itself.
