How to Travel More Spontaneously

When you think about how precious vacation time is and how expensive travel can be, it’s almost tempting to plan to make the most of your time and money. The great thing about doing this is that it’s never been easier, as there are thousands of websites, apps, and guides with information on just about every place you can go.

However, when you can plan, and even write, almost every part of your trip, something is lost. Not too long ago, the randomness of travel was considered a normal, even desirable, part of the experience. Since everyday life is so predictable, a trip to a faraway place where nothing goes according to plan is a great way to make a difference.

In an effort to get back that wild feeling, many travelers are trying to stop “over-planning” their trips and make their travels more casual. For someone who is naturally good at planning, this is easier said than done. If you don’t know where to start, here are some tips to help you.

1. Book key events

We said you don’t want to plan everything hour by hour, and it’s true, but if you pick one or two things to do that you absolutely can’t miss, you can use those things as anchors and be spontaneous around them of.

For example, if you’re traveling to Philadelphia, you can search for things to do in Philadelphia and choose from a list. If you can, book these things in advance, or at least plan when to do them, and let the rest of the trip happen spontaneously.

For those of you who usually like to plan everything, this is a great way to feel more in control; it’s a more spontaneous starting point.

2. Central Hotel

While spontaneity is fun, and the point of this post is to help you do more while traveling, one thing you don’t want to take your luck with is your accommodation. It would be very scary to arrive at your destination only to find that there is nowhere to stay, or that you have to pay more than you budgeted to get a room.

So book your hotel before you go, but make sure it’s centrally located. In this case, you can have peace of mind knowing you have somewhere to sleep and leave your belongings, but you can also just wander around, see what you come across, and have a base to return to whenever you want. You feel more adventurous when you’re in the middle of all the action.

3. Go through a day with absolutely no plans

Make sure that at least one day of your trip is completely unplanned. When you wake up, you won’t know what the day will bring. You won’t know where to eat, what to do, who to meet, etc. For some, this will be incredibly exciting. For others, it might feel a little scary. However, no matter which side of the fence you’re on, it’s worth a try.

Here’s how you find some hidden treasures you might otherwise miss. It’s also how you start to feel where you live and learn more about places, people and cultures, enabling you to get the most out of your travels.
