At this time of year, we’ve driven the end of summer and we’re going all out. In some places, however, the weather is still fairly warm and mild, so you may still have a lot of fun outdoors before the cold weather arrives! Our favorite way to take advantage of our last sunny day is to have as many picnics as our friends and family are willing to go with us. Of course, the great thing about a picnic, aside from food and family time, is that it’s a great opportunity for some cool DIY projects.

1. Clip-on Vessels

Have you ever seen those cute miniature clothes pins at the dollar store or your local craft store? Well, aside from being absolutely cute, they’re actually quite handy too! Oh Happy Day recommends sticking them to the back of plastic or wooden disposable cutlery so you can clip a fork or spoon to everyone’s lunch bag so cutlery doesn’t get lost in a mess somewhere in the bottom of the picnic basket . Cutting them off will also keep them off the ground!
2. Mason Jar Meals

Mason jar meals are actually useful in a variety of situations, such as school or work lunches or split meals at home, but we use them most often at picnics! Follow in The Decorated Cookie’s footsteps and find empty mason jars, wash them, and layer them with salad toppings, potatoes or pasta salad, or anything else that might need more protection from spilling or crushing in a picnic bag .
3. Shower Curtain Picnic Blanket Liner

By now, I’m sure you’ve noticed that we do like a good excuse to upgrade anything! However, we prefer it because the upgraded usage is very practical and saves us a lot of trouble. That’s why we’re all in favor of Real Simple’s suggestion of using an old plastic shower curtain as a protective liner between a picnic blanket and grass that may still be a little damp or dewy.

If you’re having a very large picnic, such as a large family gathering or a wedding shower, it can be difficult to bring all the odds and ends to the right places and distribute everything individually from one bag. Have you decided to wait for your last picnic until it’s a little cooler because you only like cool fall days? Then having soup in a warm thermos is a great idea for lunch! Oh Louise suggests making several different soups for people to choose from, and putting cute, rustic little labels on each so everyone knows which is which. You know, if you just try to remember them, someone will forget them!
6. Spices wrapped in straws

Are you a firm believer that you can’t have a meal without spices, even on a picnic? Well, we can’t disagree! That’s why we think the travel spice idea on Instructables is so ingenious. Having to carry a bottle full of spices to the park in a bag can be quite a hassle, so tape one end of a plastic straw firmly, fill the straw with the spices you want, and tape the other end. Keep spare tape with you to reseal at the end of the meal! We also thought it would be a good idea to label straws just to make sure no one gets something spicier than they bargained for.
