Children’s Education DIY Mini Thatched Cottage

There’s nothing more satisfying than watching the fruits of your labor grow into something wonderful right before your eyes – you’re sure to have the same fun as your kids.
Best of all, the guides we want to share with you are free to use, and you don’t need a lot of supplies to get started – it’s super easy from start to finish.

Kids’ Mini Thatched Cottage: Supplies Needed
- Pile of regular household sponges (unused, standard size, various colors)
- magic marker
- rule
- Storage container (large, plastic)
- sharp scissors
- craft knife
- fast-growing grass species
- optional decorative accents

How will you make the thatched cottage? Simple!
- Rinse new sponges with plenty of water to make sure they are clean. Wring out, but not completely dry.
- Use a magic marker to draw the shape you want to cut on the sponge (see picture)
- Cut out the shape with scissors.
- To create the room, use a craft knife to cut most of the sponge block to create the angles shown. Be careful not to cut completely.
- Build the house on the inside of the lid of the plastic container.
- Squirt the house with a bottle of water so it’s wet, but not soggy.
- When wet, take a handful of grass and sprinkle it on the sponge.
- Add a little water to the seeds, then remove the excess seeds from the container lid.
- Add the bottom of the container to create a mini greenhouse and place the unit in a warm, well-lit place. Mow the grass as it grows and water it regularly as needed.
