Don’t get me wrong, we love social networking and internet communication as much as the next person! In fact, we fully admit that we might even like it more than average. However, our use of online communication has also made us greatly appreciate older ways of chatting with our loved ones. What’s our favorite way to get in touch right now, you ask? Well, aside from beloved text messages when we need a quick reply, we’re totally obsessed with sending letters at the moment!
Of course, writing a whole letter and developing a more time-consuming pen pal Relationships are faster than sending a quick Facebook message, but we love the thought and creativity in it. As DIYers, we also love that peeling with a pen is a fantastic opportunity to get crafty!
Check out these amazing ways we’ve discovered that can really step up your letter writing game and give your pen pals the full, awesome experience of actually getting an exciting email!
1. Giant Burger Postcard

If you spend as much time thinking about food in your typical day as we do, then we’re pretty sure you’ll love this giant burger postcard idea. Making, writing and sending content can be tacky and fun for adults, but it’s also a lovely idea if you have kids who love to help you. Cut out shapes out of cardboard, draw designs, and write your letter! 2. Sew Ice Cream Cone Envelopes

5. Washi Tape Souvenir Sticks

Are you and your pen pals DIYers who like to share crafting tips in letters? Maybe you even took it a step further and actually shared bits and pieces of your favorite crafting supplies too? Well, in case you’re as obsessed with colorful washi tape as we are right now, here’s a great tip from My Life Magazine on how to share it! Glue the edge of one end of the tape you like to the edge of the popsicle stick, then wrap each one so it sticks to itself. Your friends will be able to grab the free end of the tape and rip it off of its shiny surface to use what you send them in their next water paper tape craft!
6. Double Envelope

Maybe you and your pen pal have a bond over food and cooking? Do you like to share your favorite recipes back and forth, or your kids’ favorite recipes? This is a much more fun and creative approach than sticking an extra piece of paper and a regular envelope with your letter! A crafty mom suggested sticking two small envelopes on a card – one for your real letter and one for your best cooking advice.
7. Penpal Folder

Get a pocket for some photos, a pocket for an origami gift you make yourself, a place for an inspiring card quote, and don’t forget your letter before you close the folder and send!
8. Storybook Page Envelope

Your favorite idea so far is to suggest folding nice envelopes from old calendar pages, but don’t you have any physical calendars right now? You can use many other nice paper options! Ingthings recommends recycling the pages of old, abandoned or damaged childhood storybooks to give your pen pal extra whimsy in your next letter.
9. Message Balloons

A mom, a wife, and I have a particularly interesting idea and Have fun with your pen pals! Blow up a big, beautiful balloon and write your letter or message on the front with a fine Sharpie marker. Wait until the ink dries, then untie the string at the bottom of the balloon and slowly let the air out, allowing it to retract back into place. When your pen pals open the envelope, they’ll be so excited to blow it up and read the little letters!
10. Paint Chip Gradient Cutouts

Are you a scrapbook collector with a ton of oddly shaped hole punches? Use them for peeling your pen! Go to the hardware store and buy some paint flakes that can show various shades of several colors. Punch out a shape with each color and arrange them on your letters and envelopes for extra fun, like homestead survival.
11. Coded letters

Develop your own alphabet, assigning each regular letter a simple symbol. Write letters with these symbols instead of your usual words so your pen pal has to decode each sentence to read your message. Just make sure you remember to include the decoder sheet in the envelope when you send it too!
12. Surprise Rainbow

Maybe you can accept ordinary letters in ordinary envelopes, but you still want something a little more unique for the next part of your pen pal? Try folding rainbows inside envelopes! Cut out the shape out of rainbow kraft paper (or plain paper painted in rainbow colors) and glue one end of it inside the envelope. Fold the rest into the envelope like an accordion and tuck your letter inside. When your pen pal pulls it out, the rainbow pops up too! 13. Special Envelope Card

Do you like the idea of folder letters, but your style is a little girlier? Maybe you’d rather have your version with a bunch of little pockets than see-through sleeves like the other one? Check out this design from ArtCreatiu! They suggest including a small wrapped gift, a special surprise envelope, a letter pocket, and a few other trinkets, glitter, and miniature artwork. Decorate however you want!
