How to Design Your Own Custom Mugs with Sharpies

🌐

A coffee mug with an inspiring quote, cute pattern or a phrase that reminds you of someone makes a great gift. The problem is that finding the perfect design for your friends and family isn’t always easy. However, in the crafting world, this is never a problem!

It’s easy to custom design your own mug. It’s also great on a budget if you do it right! In fact, this is one of those rare scenarios where using dollar store items will actually give you a better finished product!

Here is what you need:

  • A plain white ceramic mug (notes: Get the piece you’re customizing from the dollar store! ).
  • Oil-Based Sharpie (This can be a name brand Sharpie or dollar store brand, as long as it’s an oil-based permanent marker. Black shows best, but other colors will work too).
  • Sealing spray (we recommend using a similar glossy Mod Podge spray).
  • Wipe with alcohol and a tissue or cotton pad
  • a roasting pan.
  • into the oven.

Why shop at the dollar store?

For this particular project, there are actually good reasons to buy some of your supplies at the dollar store (except saving a few bucks, of course)! The sealant on dollar store ceramic utensils is less robust than more expensive plates and cups. This means that when you bake the item after drawing the pattern, the stamp will melt and the Sharpie ink will blend right into it.

When your project cools, your ink designs will be much stronger than if the ink just stayed on the surface of the invincible glossy finish. Your custom design will be more permanent! Once you have your supplies, it’s time to start customizing!

step 1:

Peel off any labels or stickers on the bottom of the item. You don’t want to risk putting these little papers in the oven! If they don’t start to smell burnt, they’re definitely sticking to your mug when you take it out.

Step 2:

Wash your mug. You want it to be clean and free of any residue like labels, especially if you plan to paint on it.

Step 3:

Wipe the outside surface of the cup with alcohol from a tissue or cotton pad. This ensures that the ceramic and its seal are completely free of any residue that the Sharpie ink might stick to the surface of the cup instead of it.

Step 4:

Come paint! Write a sentence in fancy cursive, draw a picture yourself, or copy a pretty picture you saw elsewhere and really liked. Black Sharpie shows best, but other colors will work too.

Step 5:

Let the cup dry for 24 hours. Allowing the ink to dry completely will help keep it permanent and washable later.

Step 6:

Place the cups on a baking sheet and place in the oven before setting the temperature and preheating. Putting the cup in while the oven is still cold will prevent it from cracking. If you put the ceramic in an already very hot oven, your project may have tiny spider cracks all over the surface!

Step 7:

Once the cups are in, preheat the oven to 350F and let it bake for 30 minutes. When the time is up, turn off the oven, but leave the cups in and let the temperature cool down.

Step 8:

Take your mug out of the oven and fill it with paper towels. Spray only the outside of the cup with a spray seal. If your design is very small (for example, only on the handle or only near the bottom of the cup), you can just spray that part.

Step 9:

Let the cup dry again for 24 hours. The spray seal must be completely dry before using or washing the cup.

Step 10:

Before giving as a gift, remove the tissue and wash the cup again. You want to remove any last remnants of the making process before anyone drinks it! Your finished design should be able to withstand sink and machine washes.

Step 11:

Get your mug as a gift! Your friends and family will love receiving things customized to their own personalities and what they like. They’ll also appreciate how much effort went into making it!

Do you know someone who likes to personalize their dishes but doesn’t use a cup very often? Instead, try to customize them:

  • a play
  • a teacup
  • a casserole
  • a tray
