This is the perfect craft to recycle t-shirts – use a hula hoop as a loom to make a woven rug! This project is very fun and easy to complete.

what do you need

Scissors
About a dozen T-shirts
33 inch hula hoop

direction:

1. For the warp, cut 1″ wide loops from the body of one or both t-shirts, remove the hem and stop at the sleeves. Ideally, these loops should all be the same color; we used two colors for the clarity of the photo. You need 11 loops in total. For the weft, cut at least 50 loops from the remaining shirt. Save unused sleeves for basket items.
2. Pull a warp on the hula hoop.
3. Add and secure a second ring, perpendicular to the first.
4. Repeat, filling in spaces, until all 11 loops are in place.
5. Push the two warp loops on top of the hula hoop together. This creates an odd number of warp spokes in your wheel, allowing the upper pattern of wefts to alternate with each new row.
6. Wrap the first weft loop around the warp, then wrap it back on itself, securing it to the center of one of the warp spokes.
7. Begin weaving the weft above and below the warp spokes, forming a tight spiral. Now, think of the two parts of each warp spoke as one unit and weave the two together. As you work, push the weft material toward the center of the hoop and keep it snug. If the weft is stretched tight, the carpet will clump or bend. When you reach the end of the weft yarn, add a new loop by threading it through the end of the first weft yarn and through itself.
8. When your rug is about 8 inches wide, start thinking of each warp spoke as two separate strips rather than a single unit, woven above or below each thread instead of a double spoke above or below. This increases the number of warp spokes, improving the structure of the project. When you reach the two warp spokes that are pushed together at the top of the loom, separate them. Think of one of the spokes as two separate strips, but continue to think of the other as a single spoke. This maintains an odd number of warp spokes.
9. When the rug is the size you want, but no more than 8 inches from the edge of the hula hoop, cut your weft hoop.
10. Tie the ends to the warp spokes and tuck the ends into the carpet.
11. Cut the warp spokes from the hoop one at a time.
12. Tie the ends in pairs, then trim them to fringe or tuck them back into the rug.
