You will need:

  • 2 elongated balloons (the type used to make balloon animals)
  • Balloon pump (unless you have gorilla lungs)
  • White (PVA) glue
  • water
  • glue container
  • yarn
  • A pair of scissors
  • needle or sharp object
  • Ribbon length (optional)
  • throwing cloth or newspaper

instruct:

1. Using the pump, blow up two skinny balloons. Try to make them the same size or as close as possible, leaving a few inches of tails. Knot them.
2. Gently tie the knotted end to the tail end to form two looped balloons as shown.
3. Cut your yarn into several 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) lengths. Pour some glue into the container. Add a little water to the glue to make it a little thinner than usual. Say 4:1 glue.
4. Now to the confusing part. One at a time, place the pieces of yarn into the glue to coat them completely and remove excess glue. Wrap your gauze around the balloon. Continuing in this fashion, wrap your balloons with glued yarn, criss-crossing the lower layers and creating a net of yarn around each balloon. Let these dry overnight on clean glass or plastic. Do not dry on the paper or your heart will be permanently attached to the ball of paper.
5. Day 2: Poke the balloon with a pin (or something sharp) and gently pull out the balloon shell.
6. Start with the bottom joint. and butt the ends together. No glue yet.
7. For the top fitting, cut half of the cylinder (length equal to the diameter of the cylinder).
8. This creates a groove into which the other end fits nicely. Checking now to make sure my heart is actually heart-shaped when the sides are butted together. Maybe you need to trim a little on the bottom of one side so it all looks nice.
9. Then reinforce the two joints with a few pieces of glue yarn. Note the many overlaps. Once dry, these joints are as strong as bulls. At this point, a few more threads of yarn were also added to the rest of the heart to make it stronger. Let your heart dry overnight on glass or plastic.
The next morning, find your heart ready to be hung and appreciated!
