4 Reasons Why Diamonds Are Love

Diamonds have long been the gemstone of choice for engagement rings. How Diamonds Became a Lover’s Gift What makes this stone so precious? Here’s everything you need to know about how diamonds are symbols of love.

Diamonds aren’t just a girl’s best friend. They are the boy’s best friends and Mx’s best friends. There are very few people in this world who would say no to a gift of diamonds. These gemstones are the hardest and strongest minerals on earth.

This fact, and many others, make them such important love symbols.

We asked the experts at Diamond Source Jewelers why diamonds are synonymous with romance. Here’s what they had to say about the symbolism.

1. Immortal

The main reason diamonds represent true love is their longevity. Diamonds are, with few exceptions, the hardest minerals known. Only a few minerals are harder than diamonds, including moissanite (a lab-grown crystal) and Lonsdaleite, which scientists use to track asteroid impacts.

None of the harder minerals have the same clarity or beauty as diamonds. Diamonds are very hard and sit at the top of the Mohs hardness scale, the scale we use to classify minerals. They are so durable we use them to coat our drills and saws so we can cut other minerals.

What does this mean for love? Thousands of years after your death and burial, the diamond in your engagement ring will still be there. The symbolism is clear: diamonds (and your love) are forever.

2. Diamonds are durable

Along the same theme, we choose diamonds for our engagement rings because of their resilience. They are one of the most durable minerals on earth. Glass will not scratch diamonds. Neither will quartz, beryl, tourmaline, amethyst, or any other gemstone other than another diamond.

This means that your stone will not get lost, chipped, cracked or scratched as you go about your day-to-day life as your fiancé. This symbolizes how we put all our efforts into love. It takes time, commitment and stamina.

Love is a marathon, not a sprint. Imagine using a softer material like opal or pectolite in your engagement ring. They will scratch and chip within a month.

3. The rarity factor

Diamonds are far less rare than you might think. The quality, clarity, color and absence of inclusions of the mineral make it a precious diamond rather than a man-made diamond. For example, black diamonds are much less expensive than A-grade diamonds. This is because you cannot measure the clarity of dark stones.

The rarity of clear, pure diamonds is what makes them so special. The cleaner the diamond, of course, the more expensive it is.

4. Price

The price of diamonds is reassuring. When you gift a diamond to your potential new fiancé, you are showing how well you can serve that person as you start living together. Choose wisely or risk hearing it for the rest of your life.
