Tips for Sleeping Well This Winter

Although sleep problems plague people year-round, they can be especially taxing during the winter months. This is especially true for people living in areas prone to freezing winter temperatures.

So, if you’re not keen to spend the winter in a constant sleep-deprived state, you’d be better off nibbling potential overnight problems in the bud. To give yourself a season full of peaceful nights, take advantage of the tips below.

1. Install a high-quality ceiling fan

While fans are often associated with warmer times of the year, a good bedroom ceiling fan can also help you sleep comfortably in the winter. Turning your fan down to low and allowing it to create a breeze is a great way to keep the air moving and prevent yourself from getting an uncomfortable roast.

Of course, it should be understood that not every ceiling fan will be equally helpful. So when shopping around for the right bedroom fan, you’d better exercise your discernment. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should limit your choices to the most expensive fans, but it’s generally best to avoid buying fans based on price alone. For example, if you buy an incredibly cheap fan, you should expect exactly what you pay for.

Also, keep an eye out for ceiling fans with various settings and remote controls. Also, if you have limited ceiling space, look for fans designed for small rooms.

2. Invest in Cold Weather Bedding

Using the same bedding year-round may feel like a budget, but it’s actually guaranteed to affect your overnight comfort. For example, using cold-weather bedding in summer can lead to unbearable sleep conditions, while using warm-weather bedding in summer can make your teeth chatter all night.

So if you’re currently lacking sheets and comforters designed for use in cold weather, now is the perfect time to rectify that. When looking for the right winter bedding, look for sheets and comforters made from materials like down, wool, brushed cotton, and satin.

You can buy winter pajamas made from insulating materials such as wool, flannel, cotton and silk.

3. Hang the heat curtain

Most homes lose a fair amount of air through windows. Even if your windows are kept closed throughout the winter, hot air can easily escape and cold air can easily enter through the windows. To minimize the amount of indoor air escaping, consider equipping your bedroom windows with insulating curtains.

As the name suggests, these curtains consist of a thick layer of thermal material that excels at sealing in heat. In fact, these curtains can reduce window heat loss by up to 25%.

As an added bonus, some thermal curtains double as blackout curtains. So, if you’re someone who sleeps best in complete darkness, thermal curtains can be an especially worthwhile investment.

4. Prepare your brain for sleep

No matter how comfy you make your bedroom, if your brain is still running, you’ll have a hard time falling asleep. For this reason, a soothing distraction before bed is recommended. This entails turning off various screens for 30 minutes to a full hour before starting the hay and doing something to relax your mind and body. Examples of such activities include reading, journaling, meditation, and deep breathing exercises.

Also, if you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, avoid picking up your phone, as it will only make it harder to fall back asleep.

Lack of proper sleep can inhibit daily functioning to a great extent. Sleep provides a person’s brain and body with an opportunity to recharge and detoxify, helping to ensure that they are prepared to face the challenges presented by the waking world.

Unfortunately, maintaining good sleep habits can be especially difficult during harsh winters — especially for people from parts of the country that are prone to extreme winter weather. Anyone looking for effective ways to avoid winter sleep problems will do well to heed the directions discussed above.
